Living Your Human Design Type – An Introduction

Human Design is a system that combines elements of astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, the Chakra system, and quantum physics to offer insights into one’s personality, strengths, and challenges. It is important to note that Human Design is not a science but rather a tool for self-awareness and personal growth. There are five main Human Design Types: Manifestor (about 9% of the population), Generator (35%), Manifesting Generator (35%), Projector (20%), and Reflector (1%). Each Type has unique characteristics and ways of interacting with the world.

Manifestors

Manifestors are characterised by their ability to initiate actions and create change. They have a unique aura that is closed and repelling, not in a negative sense, but in a way that creates a certain independence and impact.

Key aspects of being a Manifestor are:

  • Initiation and Impact: Manifestors are the initiators among the Human Design Types. They have the energy and ability to start new projects, create change, and set things in motion without needing to wait for external cues or invitations, unlike other Types.

  • Independence and Autonomy: Manifestors value their independence and autonomy. They are often most effective and satisfied when they have the freedom to follow their own ideas and impulses.

  • Energetic Bursts: Unlike Generators and Manifesting Generators, Manifestors don’t have a sustainable source of energy. Instead, they experience bursts of energy. They can be very productive during these bursts but need to manage their energy and take breaks to avoid burnout.

  • Informing as a Strategy: An essential strategy for Manifestors is to inform others before they take action. Since their energy can be intense and impactful, it sometimes creates resistance or surprise among those around them. By informing others of their intentions, they can mitigate resistance and create smoother interactions.

  • Sense of Purpose: Manifestors often have a strong sense of purpose or mission. They are driven to create or manifest something significant, and this sense of purpose can be a guiding force in their lives.

  • Anger vs. Peace: The emotional themes for Manifestors are anger and peace. When they feel controlled, unable to act on their impulses, or encounter too much resistance, they may experience anger. When they are in alignment with their purpose and able to manifest freely, they feel a sense of peace.

  • Selective Engagement: Manifestors are not designed to engage with everything and everyone. It’s crucial for them to be selective about where they put their energy, as they can get drained if spread too thin. Focusing on what truly aligns with their purpose is key.

  • Intuitive Clarity: Manifestors often have a clear sense of what they want to initiate, based on internal insights. Honouring and trusting this intuitive clarity is important for them to make decisions and take actions that are in alignment with their true selves.

In summary, Manifestors are initiators and are known for their ability to start projects and make things happen, so if this is you:

  • Honour your need for autonomy and the freedom to initiate.
  • Inform others about your actions and decisions to minimise resistance.
  • Trust your intuition when making choices.
  • Delegate tasks and surround yourself with a supportive team.
  • Take breaks and honour your need for rest and rejuvenation.

Generators

Generators are considered the builders of society. They are characterised by having a defined Sacral Centre in their Human Design chart, which is associated with life-force energy and vitality. This gives Generators a consistent and sustainable energy supply, allowing them to engage in activities for extended periods of time.

Key aspects of being a Generator are:

  • Response Mechanism: Generators are designed to respond. This means that instead of initiating actions or projects, they benefit from waiting for something to respond to, whether it’s a question, an invitation, or an opportunity. Their energy is best harnessed when they are responding to something that genuinely interests or excites them.

  • Sacral Energy: Generators have an abundant supply of energy. They are designed to use this energy through work, creativity, or any activity that they find fulfilling. It’s important for Generators to expend this energy daily, as it replenishes.

  • Gut Response: Generators have a strong gut response. This is a non-verbal, visceral feeling in the body that guides them towards or away from things. Listening to this gut response is crucial for Generators to find satisfaction in their endeavours.

  • Finding Joy in the Process: Generators are not so much about the end goal as they are about the process. They thrive when they find joy and satisfaction in the work they do. When they are engaged in something they love, they have the power to uplift others around them with their energy.

  • Frustration vs. Satisfaction: The emotional themes for Generators are frustration and satisfaction. When they are not using their energy correctly or are involved in unfulfilling activities, they often feel frustrated. Conversely, when they are aligned with what they love and are responding to the correct stimuli, they find deep satisfaction.

  • Patience: Generators are encouraged to be patient and allow life to come to them, rather than aggressively pursuing goals. This might feel counter-intuitive, but by waiting for the right opportunities to which they can genuinely respond, they are more likely to find fulfilment.

  • Mastery Through Repetition: Generators often find satisfaction in mastering skills. They are naturally inclined to deepen their expertise through repetition and incremental improvement.

In summary, Generators have consistent life force energy and can sustain productivity over time so if this is you:

  • Follow your gut response and pursue activities that bring you joy and satisfaction.
  • Trust your inner energy and listen to your body’s signals.
  • Be patient and wait for the right opportunities to come to you.
  • Focus on one task at a time and avoid overcommitting.
  • Regular physical exercise can help you release excess energy.

Manifesting Generators

Manifesting Generators have a defined Sacral Centre like Generators, which gives them sustainable energy, but they also have the ability to initiate like Manifestors.

Key aspects of being a Manifesting Generator are:

  • Hybrid Energy: Manifesting Generators have a unique combination of the sustaining energy of Generators and the initiating abilities of Manifestors. This allows them to be highly efficient, versatile, and capable of handling multiple tasks at once.

  • Multi-Tasking and Variety: They often have a multitude of interests and can excel in multiple areas. They may find it hard to stick to one thing and may feel the need to juggle various projects or hobbies.

  • Quickness and Skipping Steps: Manifesting Generators tend to move quickly and sometimes skip steps in their eagerness to get things done. While this can be an advantage, it is also important for them to slow down when necessary to ensure they aren’t missing critical details.

  • Gut Response and Excitement: Like Generators, they have a strong Sacral response that guides them. They should pay attention to what excites them and ignites their energy. This response can be instantaneous, but it’s important for them to ensure that they are not rushing into things without considering the implications.

  • Balancing Initiation with Response: While they have the ability to initiate like Manifestors, it is often beneficial for Manifesting Generators to wait for a sign or something to respond to before jumping into action. This can help align their initiating power with the sustainable energy of the Sacral.
  • Informing and Navigating Resistance: Like Manifestors, Manifesting Generators benefit from informing those around them of their actions and intentions. This helps in minimising resistance and ensuring smoother interactions with others.

  • Experimentation and Learning: Manifesting Generators often learn by doing. They benefit from experimenting, trying new things, and sometimes learning from what doesn’t work.

  • Frustration vs. Satisfaction: Like Generators, their emotional themes are frustration and satisfaction. They find satisfaction in using their energy in fulfilling ways but can experience frustration when blocked or not using their energy effectively.

  • Managing Energy: With their bursts of energy, it’s important for Manifesting Generators to also know when to take a step back and rest. This ensures they don’t burn out and can maintain a balance in their activities.

In summary, Manifesting Generators are known for their versatility and multitasking abilities so if this is you:

  • Embrace your multifaceted nature and explore a variety of interests.
  • Trust your gut response and follow the paths that most excite you.
  • Maintain a balance between action and rest to avoid burnout.
  • Be open to unexpected opportunities and changes in direction.
  • Communicate your intentions and involve others in your projects.

Projectors

Projectors are characterised by their innate ability to see and understand systems and people in a deeply insightful way. They often possess a natural talent for guiding, managing, and directing others.

Key aspects of being a Projector are:

  • Lack of Defined Sacral Centre: Unlike Generators, Projectors do not have a defined Sacral Centre, which means they lack the consistent energy for work and action. As such, they are not designed for long hours of labour but rather to work in short bursts and to use their energy wisely.

  • Recognition and Invitation: A central theme for Projectors is the importance of waiting for recognition and invitation before sharing their insights or taking on major roles. This is because their penetrating and focused energy can sometimes be too intense if not invited and may lead to resistance from others.

  • Guidance and Management: Projectors excel in roles where they can guide, lead, or manage others. They are often good at seeing the big picture or understanding systems and can be valuable in helping others navigate these systems effectively.

  • Deep Understanding: Projectors often have a gift for understanding subjects deeply. They can become experts in particular fields and are often drawn to specialised knowledge.

  • Energy Management: It’s crucial for Projectors to manage their energy effectively. Since they don’t have a sustainable energy source, they need to take regular breaks and not overcommit themselves.

  • Importance of the Right Environment: Being in an environment where they are recognised and valued is essential for a Projector’s well-being. They thrive in settings where their skills are appreciated, and their insights are welcomed.

  • Bitterness vs. Success: The emotional themes for Projectors are bitterness and success. They may feel bitterness if they are not recognized or if their guidance is not valued. When they find an environment where they are appreciated and can use their talents effectively, they experience a sense of success.

  • Understanding and Studying Others: Projectors are naturally attuned to understanding others. They may find themselves observing and studying the behaviour and motivations of people around them. This ability can be harnessed in roles such as counselling, consulting, or leadership.

In summary, Projectors are natural guides with an ability to see and understand others so if this is you:

  • Recognise your natural talent for guidance and observation.
  • Wait for invitations before offering advice or sharing your wisdom.
  • Surround yourself with supportive and uplifting people.
  • Honour your need for rest and downtime to maintain clarity.
  • Focus on mastering a specific area of expertise.

Reflectors

Reflectors have a unique aura and energetic makeup, characterised by having all nine Centres in their Human Design chart undefined. This makes them highly sensitive to their environment and the energies of people around them.

Key aspects of being a Reflector are:

  • Sensitivity to Environment: Reflectors are like mirrors, reflecting the environment and the people they are with. They are deeply affected by the energies around them and need to be mindful of the environments they place themselves in.

  • Decision-Making over Time: Reflectors are encouraged to take their time in making decisions. Because they are so influenced by what’s around them, it’s recommended that Reflectors wait a full lunar cycle (about 28 days) before making major decisions. This allows them to experience how they feel in different environments and under different influences.

  • Changeability and Fluidity: A Reflector’s sense of self and energy levels can change dramatically depending on where they are and who they are with. They can feel and appear very different in different settings.

  • Wisdom Through Observation: Reflectors have a natural ability to observe and understand systems and communities. They can have a sort of ‘bird’s eye view’ wisdom about what is going on around them and can be valuable contributors in providing insights and observations.

  • Connection to the Moon: Reflectors are particularly influenced by the moon and its cycle. The moon goes through the entire I Ching wheel in about 28 days, and each day it highlights different aspects of the Reflector’s design. Paying attention to the lunar cycle can help Reflectors understand themselves and make decisions.

  • Need for Variety: Being in the same environment or routine can be detrimental for Reflectors. They thrive on experiencing a variety of environments and relationships, as it allows them to explore different aspects of themselves.

  • Importance of Community: Finding the right community is especially important for Reflectors. They thrive in places where they feel valued and understood. They are often seen as the barometers of the health of a community – if a Reflector is thriving, it’s likely a good environment for others as well.

  • Surprise and Disappointment: The emotional themes for Reflectors are surprise and disappointment. Reflectors can experience deep disappointment if they feel they are not recognising or living their purpose or potential. However, when aligned with environments and communities that honour their uniqueness, they experience the joy of surprise and connection.

In summary, Reflectors are highly sensitive to their environment and have a deep connection to the lunar cycle so if this is you:

  • Give yourself ample time and space for decision-making.
  • Surround yourself with diverse people and environments.
  • Regularly evaluate your surroundings and adjust as needed.
  • Pay attention to the lunar cycle and notice how it affects your energy.
  • Find supportive and understanding communities with which to share your insights.
