Once in a Blue Moon

"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."
— Seneca

A lovely friend once told me about a hotel doorman who answered every polite enquiry about his day with a single word: “Outstanding!” Outstanding just about covers my May too — and I hope yours as well. The book launch, my birthday, and a trip to Portugal curated by a fabulous Canadian lady who specialises in transformational travel. Her programme, Pleasure in Portugal, delivered exactly what it promised: a series of experiences each one surpassing the last, all of them gently inviting us to find our edges and move through them. Very Tower Bottle, as you’ll see below.

A Blue Moon – 31st May

Two full moons in one calendar month is unusual enough to have given us a phrase. We say “once in a blue moon” for what rarely arrives, and here one is, rising on the very last day of May just as spring tips into summer and the evenings stretch long and golden.

There is something worth paying attention to in the rare. This moon invites us to look at what we have been building and to consider what might be ready to take its next form

Gate 16 — Selectivity: Enthusiasm and Skills

As the Blue Moon reaches fullness, the Sun illuminates Gate 16 in Human Design, Selectivity, the gate of Enthusiasm and Skills. This gate carries a particular intelligence: the ability to sift through everything on offer and identify what has genuine relevance, usefulness, and a prospective future. It is a discerning gate, and a practical one.

When everything is in a state of preparation, Gate 16 understands that it is possible to relax into the process, to gather more skills while the timing matures. This is not a gate that rushes to begin. It knows that what you choose to invest your enthusiasm in matters as much as the effort you bring once you start.

The shadow is indifference, a flatness that settles when enthusiasm has been deferred for too long, when the gap between what you can see is possible and what you are doing has stretched beyond comfort. You may recognise it as a drawing back from what once lit you up. The question worth asking at the shadow level is a simple one: what would it mean to let yourself enjoy this again?

The gift that emerges through awareness is versatility. This is not energy spread thin across too many things, but the ability to draw on genuine breadth and apply it with precision where it is needed. The highest expression is mastery, and Gate 16 reaches it through a particular alchemy of skill, timing, and real enthusiasm. There is a quality to this gate of trying, practising, and ultimately succeeding, precisely because it has chosen well before it began.

Line 5, Resisting, carries its own specific tension. You can see potential clearly. Something holds back the full endorsement, for yourself as much as for others, often a caution that has hardened into a habit of avoiding commitment in case things disappoint. The invitation here is to work out whether you are exercising genuine wisdom or simply staying safe by staying non-committal.

Bottle 16 — The Tower

The Colour Mirrors system names Bottle 16 The Tower, and the image is a striking one: a structure struck by lightning, suddenly revealed for what it was rather than what we believed it to be.

Think of a young bird pushed from the nest. Everything it has known as solid falls away in an instant. Then, in the falling, it discovers the thing it was always built to do. That is the quality of this bottle. The Tower does not arrive to diminish you. It arrives to return you to something truer.

The olive below holds the interplay of love and fear, green and yellow woven together, the warmth we are reaching towards and the contraction we have not yet released. The lilac above is the colour of spirit, of the perspective that sees beyond the structures we construct for ourselves. Together they ask you to consider what you are holding onto not because it serves you, but because you have forgotten that holding on is a choice.

The reassurance in this bottle is worth staying with. Wherever change is taking you, it is being guided by something that has your greater good in sight. You are being taken seriously as a spiritual being having a human experience, and your spirit will not lead you anywhere that is not ultimately right for you.

Gate 16 and Bottle 16 together form a clear invitation. The intelligence to recognise what is worth pursuing is available to you. The willingness to release what has been outgrown is being asked of you. The bird, it turns out, could fly all along.

Working with June's Energy

You might like to ponder these questions over the coming weeks:

  • What structure have I been holding onto for safety rather than because it still serves me?
  • What would it look like to bring genuine enthusiasm, rather than duty or obligation, to something that matters to me?
  • Where might trying, practising, and trusting the process be more useful than waiting until I feel completely ready?

Book Corner

Once in a blue moon, I recommend a novel. This is that month.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig is a book I love, and if you have not read it yet I am a little envious of you having it still ahead. It follows Nora Seed, who finds herself in a library between life and death, where each book on the shelves holds a different version of the life she might have lived. It is a story about regret, possibility, and what it means to truly recognise the life you want.

For a month that asks us to choose wisely, release what no longer fits, and trust that the falling is part of the flying, it is a perfect companion.

The Inner Forge — June's New Moon Circle

Our June New Moon Circle is on Monday 15th June at 7:00–8:30pm BST. These monthly gatherings with Kit Mills, Mark Stevens, and myself are a space to pause, reconnect, and tend our inner fires in community.

Final Thoughts

A Blue Moon marks the rare and the ready. May this one find you willing to release whatever is holding you back, trusting in the wings you have had all along.

With love and in gratitude,
