The Sacred Art of Stillness

"The more quiet you become, the more you can hear."
Ram Dass

Is it just me, or are our traditional celebrations fading even faster? As I reflected on May Day recently, I noticed the absence of Maypoles, May Queens, Morris dancing, and community feasts that once marked this time of year. While bunting adorns my local High Street in honour of VE Day’s 80th anniversary, the daily rhythms of life continue largely uninterrupted.

Perhaps my sensitivity to this cultural shift was heightened by my experience of Bali’s Day of Silence, Nyepi, during my recent travels. For 24 sacred hours, the entire island pauses—no fires are lit, no work is done, no travel undertaken, no entertainment engaged. Even the skies fall quiet as flights are grounded. It is a collective exhale—a profound invitation to stop.

The days before Nyepi vibrate with expressive energy as the Balinese create towering ogoh-ogoh—representations of inner and outer demons. These are paraded through streets in lively confrontation, then ceremonially burned. This vivid act of release—naming and transforming shadows before entering stillness—struck me as profoundly wise.

And then, the hush descends. Streets empty. Night falls darker without lights. There is no movement, only presence. In this island-wide meditation, nature breathes easier, the air clears, and stars shine brighter. There is something deeply moving about this collective pause that reminds us that transformation often begins not with action, but with rest; not with striving, but with surrender.

The Flower Moon – 12th May

This month’s Full Moon is known as the Flower Moon, named for the abundant spring blooms in Native American traditions. Also called the Milk Moon or Planting Moon, this moon will appear at 17:55 UK time on 12th May in the sign of Scorpio. This particular moon is called a “micromoon” because it occurs when the moon is at its furthest point from Earth (known as apogee)—approximately 251,828 miles (405,278 kilometres) away. This greater distance makes the moon appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual. Though not accompanied by major astronomical events like eclipses, it presents an excellent opportunity for stargazing and cultural celebrations, with astrological associations of intensity and transformation.

Exploring Sun and Moon Alignment

Layered with the wisdom of Gate 23 — Assimilation: Stabilising, we’re invited to peel away the non-essential to reveal what is truly substantial. This gate teaches about standing firm in your truth, even in the face of adversity, and recognising when to step away from the straightforward path when conscience calls you to different action. The potential shadow of this gate is complexity—which can lead to confusion when we overcomplicate our lives and decisions. But through the gift of simplicity, we learn to distill wisdom to its essence. This opens the doorway to quintessence—that pure, refined understanding that remains when all unnecessary elements have been removed.

Line 4 — Diversifying brings in a deeper layer: individual strength overcomes all tribulations. What you say matters deeply, requiring you to listen carefully to your own words and consider their effect. The timing of speech becomes as important as its content.

To support you through this lunar portal, the energies of Bottle 23 bring healing through the vibration of royal blue paired with royal blue. This bottle indicates an initiation successfully completed. What was difficult in your last cycle has now passed, and you can find tranquillity in this completion.

Royal Blue relates to the third eye chakra, affirming that your insight can be trusted and it is safe to share what you see. You might find it easier to write than to speak, but it is necessary that your wisdom be shared. It is time to step out of darkness and back into light, where all you have learned can be used to teach others.

Weaving the Threads of Wisdom

There’s a beautiful synchronicity between my experience of Nyepi in March, the current Flower Moon’s transformative energy, and the wisdom of Gate 23. Each invites us to a similar place—one of discernment and essential truth. Just as the Balinese face their symbolic demons before entering stillness, we too are called to name what no longer serves us. As the Flower Moon illuminates from its distant vantage point, we gain perspective on what truly matters. And through Gate 23’s gift of simplicity, we find the courage to let go of complexity and trust our inner knowing.

The royal blue bottle of Initiation stands as confirmation that we are ready. Whatever challenges we’ve moved through recently have prepared us for this moment of clarity and expression. In the stillness, in the moonlight, in the space created by what we release—there we find our voice, our purpose, and our next beautiful step forward.

Book Corner

This month I’m sharing a fascinating book that resonates deeply with our theme of assimilation and simplicity: Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill.

Written in 1938 but hidden for over 70 years, this bold and provocative work explores the unseen forces that limit human potential. Through an imagined interview with the “Devil,” Hill exposes the concept of drifting—a passive, habitual state that disconnects us from purpose and keeps us bound to fear, doubt, and mediocrity.

Hill’s antidote is fierce clarity: a definite purpose, guided by self-mastery, thoughtful choice, and a willingness to learn from adversity. Still radically relevant today, this book serves as a wake-up call to reclaim the power of conscious living—to step out of complexity and into the simplicity of purposeful action.
